What's new in 2026?
Thank you for your interest in Ekonsepto.
Ekonsepto is a volunteer-led initiative that promotes economics literacy through research, public engagement, scholarly discussion, and accessible communication. We believe that economics should not be limited to technical discussions among specialists, but should be understandable and relevant to citizens, students, educators, and decision-makers alike. This understanding is reflected in our ongoing research agenda on public engagement with economic information and economic news.
As an organization, we are entering a new phase.
Rather than pursuing numerous programs simultaneously, Ekonsepto is concentrating on a smaller number of activities where we believe we can have the greatest impact:
Economics literacy research
Reading groups and learning communities
Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) activities
Long-form publications and public scholarship
Strategic partnerships and outreach
We are looking for volunteers who are excited about learning, research, writing, and building communities around economic ideas.
What is YSI?
What is YSI?
The Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) is a global network supported by the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET). YSI brings together students, researchers, practitioners, and early-career scholars from around the world.
Our previous YSI activities include:
YSI Panel at the Philippine Economic Society Conference (2024) "Mitigating Socioeconomic Inequality Through Local and National Initiatives" This panel brought together scholars and practitioners to discuss responses to socioeconomic inequality and showcased Ekonsepto's commitment to connecting academic discussions with real-world challenges.
Reading Group: False Nostalgia by JC Punongbayan Organized as part of Ekonsepto's growing reading group activities, this discussion focused on historical narratives, economic development, and public understanding of the Philippine experience.
Book Club: The Econocracy Inspired by themes that also inform Ekonsepto's economics literacy agenda, this book club examines The Econocracy: The Perils of Leaving Economics to the Experts and explores how ordinary citizens can better participate in economic discussions and decision-making.
Many Ekonsepto activities now overlap with YSI communities and events. Volunteer may have opportunities to engage with YSI activities, support event organization, contribute to discussions, and connect with scholars from different countries and disciplines.

Our ways of working
Ekonsepto is a volunteer-led initiative built on collaboration, flexibility, and mutual respect. We recognize that our volunteers balance academic, professional, and personal commitments, so we aim to create a working environment that is both productive and sustainable.
Organizational Structure
Ekonsepto operates through small project teams and working groups aligned with our key areas of activity. Each volunteer is encouraged to take initiative, contribute ideas, and participate in discussions. While some volunteers may serve as coordinators for specific activities, we strive to maintain a collaborative and participatory culture.
Monthly Meetings
We typically hold one general volunteer meeting each month to. Attendance is encouraged but we understand that schedules may vary. Outside of the monthly meeting, each working group is free to determine how it wishes to organize its activities.

Ekonsepto is committed to open knowledge and the broad dissemination of educational and research materials. Where possible, our publications are released under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC) license. This allows others to:

Help Ekonsepto build sustainable partnerships and secure resources that support our mission of advancing economics literacy through research, reading groups, publications, and public engagement.
Responsibilities
Support communication and relationship-building with current and prospective partners.
Coordinate outreach related to events, publications, reading groups, and research initiatives.
Represent Ekonsepto in meetings and networking opportunities when appropriate.
Explore opportunities for in-kind support, including venues, speakers, dissemination assistance, software access, promotional support, and research resources.
Help develop strategies for the long-term sustainability of Ekonsepto's programs and initiatives.
Expected Commitment
Approximately 2-5 hours per week, with flexibility depending on ongoing projects and events.

As Ekonsepto shifts toward long-form public scholarship, writers play a central role in translating research, policy discussions, academic debates, and current events into content that can be understood by students, professionals, educators, and general audiences.
Writers
Draft original articles for Ekonsepto's Substack and publications.
Write explainers on economic concepts, policies, statistics, and current issues.
Contribute essays, reflections, interviews, book reviews, and event reports.
Translate technical research and academic findings into accessible language.
Collaborate with editors to prepare content for publication.
Editors
Assist in editing and proofreading articles, essays, interviews, and educational materials.
Support authors in improving clarity, accessibility, and readability for non-specialist audiences.
Assist in preparing and formatting articles for publication on Substack.

Organize regular reading group sessions and discussions.
Develop reading schedules and annual themes.
Coordinate logistics for meetings and online sessions.
Facilitate discussions and encourage participant engagement.

Ekonsepto is increasingly investing in research on economics literacy, public understanding of economic issues, and economic communication.
A recent example is our national study:
"Public Understanding of Economic News and Its Democratic Implications: Results of a Philippinewide Self-Reported Survey" which examines how Filipinos consume and understand economic news and explores the implications for economics literacy and democratic participation. The study draws on a nationally representative survey and reflects Ekonsepto's commitment to evidence-based public engagement.
Volunteers interested in research are encouraged to review our working papers, preprints, policy briefs, and future publications.
Responsibilities
Conduct literature reviews and background research.
Assist in identifying relevant theories, frameworks, and methodologies.
Support survey, interview, and focus group preparation.
Assist with data cleaning and organization.
Support quantitative and qualitative analysis tasks.
Contribute to data visualization and presentation of findings.
